Julie's quote for 2025 is "it is far better to light the candle than to curse the darkness" by William L. Watkinson. Celebration and joy are more important now than ever before.
The WestShore Chamber is pleased to offer the first in a multi-year series of celebrations starting with The 29+ Party when we will celebrate the years of service to the WestShore Chamber by our Executive Director Julie Lawlor (10), our Bookkeeper Bill Stafford of Bear Mountain Accounting (10), and our former President Ingrid Vaughan (9+). Taking place on March 7, 2025 from 7:00 - 10:00 PM at Olympic View Golf Club, it will be an evening of connection, music, and celebration with our extended Chamber community.
You will be greeted on arrival with a celebratory glass of champagne (or sparkling apple juice) courtesy of RDF Group Ltd & the Chambers Group Insurance Plan! You can expect delicious food, fun, networking, and dancing to music ranging from the Beatles to Chappell Roan. PLUS, one day before International Women's Day, this event will support WIN!
(And if you don't dance, don't worry. Dancing is NOT mandatory!)
Tickets went on sale on February 5 for this family-friendly event, with a portion of each ticket purchased going to the Win Cooperative. In order to create a safe and welcoming environment, we ask everyone attending our events to abide by our Member Code of Conduct

Social media platforms were designed to bring us closer together. Instead, society is more polarized than ever. Are the platforms that were designed to foster connection creating an existential threat to democracy?
As a wave of populist, anti-democratic heads of state are elected around the world, we can’t help but wonder how Silicon Valley social media billionaires like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg are shaping the conversation. In the case of our neighbours to the south, the newly re-instated Trump administration is outwardly revealing its ties to the “bro-ligarchy.”
As Canada heads into our own federal election, will we be able to resist the “bro-ligarchy”?
Join Dr. Jaigris Hodson at this panel event that brings together experts from a variety of fields to discuss technology, online status, political influence, polarization, and the factors that drive the global populist turn. Experts will also offer suggestions for how to resist these forces and protect both democracy and the most vulnerable people in our communities.
Your panelists:
Daniel Drache, professor emeritus of Political Science at York University and senior research fellow at the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies.
Jaigris Hodson, associate professor in the College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Royal Roads University and Canada Research Chair for Digital Communication for the Public Interest.
Thomas Homer-Dixon, founder and executive director of the Cascade Institute at Royal Roads University.
Victoria O’meara, lecturer of Digital Media in the School of Arts, Media and Communication at the University of Leicester.
Shauneen Pete, faculty in the College of Interdisciplinary Studies and chair of the Emerging Indigenous Scholars Circle at Royal Roads University.

For 65 years, we have been helping kids get to the same starting line. Every year, it’s getting harder. Kids face challenges today that were unimaginable even a decade or two ago. Child poverty is on the rise. Youth mental health is collapsing. Kids are not okay.
As one of the leading providers of child and youth services in Greater Victoria, our Clubs see firsthand how profoundly and disproportionately food insecurity impacts kids. 1 in 3 children across Canada are living in food-insecure households. Young bodies need nutrients to thrive. Young people with full bellies can think better, perform better, learn better and make better decisions. Without food security, nothing else is possible.
We are already serving over 28,000 snacks and 9,100 meals a year to kids and youth who come through our doors, but we need your help to bridge the widening gap across our 6 Club locations. The need is growing as more and more of our kids require support with food at our Clubs.
We touch on every aspect of what the next generation needs to thrive – not just survive. Whether it’s food security, mental health and wellness, leadership and career training, or simply empowering them and giving them a safe place to be themselves, we have shown up for our kids.
Our Snacks for Jacks fundraising goal is $5000 by May 30, 2025 to help feed kids and youth in our programs for the rest of the year. Your support can transform a life. Every dollar you give provides children and youth with food they need to help us nourish young minds. Every donation over $20 is eligible for a tax receipt!
